![]() ![]() In December 1993, just one week after Apogee released sci-fi Wolfenstein successor Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, Id Software struck back with a new game. Wolfenstein 3D and its contemporaries had looked good and played well, but the fact that they essentially played on a grid-based 2D map viewed from a first-person perspective became more and more apparent over time - particularly as titles in other genres such as Ultima Underworld were starting to experiment with environments that had height as well as width and depth. ![]() The first-person shooter genre of the early 1990s had helped push gaming technology forward significantly, as we've already seen.īut there was still a long way to go before the genre would provide a truly immersive experience. ![]()
